“House of playing cards”
A must for card players and unusual art lovers!
The innovative project Museum-Theatricals was launched in Peterhof on December 22, 2018. It is inviting visitors to enjoy the spectacle that carries on the idea of first and only museum in Russia fully dedicated to the playing cards as a specific type of art pieces and one of the people’s most favorite entertainments. The museum had been functioning in Peterhof since 2007 till 2017. The new exposition is now located in one of the cavalier houses on the side of Upper Park built back in the end of 18th century.
The space of museum-theatricals was organized in a very special way with the use of modern technologies including virtual installations, video exhibitions showcases with interactive lighting, exhibits “coming alive”. Traditional exposition is combined with multimedia show. This combination makes the study of diverse history of playing cards very bright and impressive. There are more than 10 000 objects on display arranged in the interiors decorated in various styles of different epochs telling the full story of development of card games and playing cards themselves in Russia, Europe, Asia and America.
Walking along the galleries the visitors will be able to meet up with royal gamblers that will tell their story about relations between playing cards and Peterhof. They will even come up with the queens of all card suits played by a famous Russian actress Ksenia Rappoport.
Besides the cards used for playing various games, there are also educational, advertising, commercial, souvenir and transformational card decks on display, along with accessories and equipment for card playing. There is even a device for printing cards exhibited!
Should we add that the subjects of fortune-telling, casino are fully covered in their own rooms, after visiting which one will be able to visit the library of passions to find out more about influence of card games on world culture. Of course, one will have an opportunity to learn more about Russian card traditions and their changes caused by lifestyle changes.
