Peterhof had been serving Russian emperors for 200 years as a grand summer residence. The seaside paradise was built, as a grandiose triumphal memorial glorifying the grandeur of Russia, in conquering the much needed and desired access to the Baltic Sea, during the Great Northern War.
The unofficial name of Peterhof - Northern Versailles - speaks for itself. Even the most experienced tourists will be struck with beauty and a magic combination of wonderful green parks, colorful gardens, fabulous palaces and marvelous fountains.
The magnificent Grand Peterhof Palace is the part of a tremendous palace and park ensemble in Peterhof. Its interiors are beautifully decorated and shine with its glory for visitors' pleasure.
During the years of the Second World War, the Grand Palace was bombed and burned. It seemed that it would be impossible to re-create it from the ruins. But already in May 1964, the first restored halls were re-opened. Today, the visitors can expect a fascinating journey around the magical palace, filled with objects of decorative-applied art, splendid furniture and superb sculptural and art works.
