Initially founded by Peter the Great as fortification complex in Gulf of Finland protecting Russia from the western invasion in Northern War, Kronshtadt is the place of location of Russian Baltic fleet today. Besides there is a beautiful Saint Nicholas Cathedral situated in Kronshtadt built for navy servants in the very beginning of 20th century. Only couple of years ago its renovation had been finished, and Cathedral was returned to Russian Orthodox Church - before that it served as cinema for naval students living and studying in Kronshtadt. Along with that the Kotlin Island with its archipelago is a great attraction for those who like exploring the ruins - the mysterious forts are open for tourists today to demonstrate the time changes that happened to the complex that someday saved Saint Petersburg from Swedish marine attack.
St. Nicholas Cathedral is open daily 8.00 - 20.00
