Gatchina
Gatchina is located on the territories that belonged to Sweden before Peter the Great conquered them in Northern War. Catherine II found this location just perfect to build a summer residence for her favourite - count Orlov. But she wished to get the beautiful English style palace back to give it to her son Paul I. Later it belonged to Nicholas I, Alexander II, Alexander III. It had been upgraded to the needs of new owners, so what we see today is compilation of all the imperial tastes and hard work of restorers that brought the palace ruined during World war II back to life. Beautiful English and Dutch parks with picturesque isles and ponds will sure make you fall in love with the place.
